A singer/songwriter with several hits of his own in the 1960s and 1970s. He also wrote hits for many other artists, most notably for Lynn Anderson with '(I Never Promised You) A Rose Garden'. He also wrote hits for Billy Joe Royal ('Down in the Boondocks'), Deep Purple ('Hush'), Kuka Shaker ('Hush'), Elvis Presley ('Walk a Mile in My Shoes') and Bryan Ferry ('Walk a Mile in My Shoes').
